On May 23rd Kate Cihon and I took our industry message to the hill along with 850 other NAIFA members during our Congressional Conference that happens every year the week before Memorial Day. About 20-25 in attendance were from the great state of Colorado!
We break into small groups and meet with our Senators and Representatives to ask them to support policies that encourage Americans to save for retirement and to have a holistic financial plan in place to protect themselves and their families from financial risk.
Kate and I were in the same group and met with Congress Woman Dianna DeGette’s office and Senator Cory Gardner’s office. We met with their aides and we made two asks one was to please join the Financial Security and Life Insurance Caucus and the other was to support the Retirement Enhancement and Savings Act of 2018. While there, Kate shared how these impact our businesses and I shared that I had four people die last year ages 41-21 and that ONE, yes ONE, had life insurance. Inevitably, I then asked them to join the caucus.
NAIFA’s Congressional Conference is the LARGEST Capitol Hill fly-in grassroots event in our industry! We saw many of our WIFS (Women In Insurance and Financial Services) Sister’s marching on the hill representing our fellow American’s from their states. It is such a proud feeling to be marching up the stairs and passing another WIFS or NAIFA member. You just want to high-five as you pass, we were everywhere! 850 strong!
There really are no words to describe the feelings I get every year when we go to the hill to help protect the American people. By sharing our stories and stories of client’s with our lawmakers, we make a difference... I swear we do. You can feel it in the room and by the expressions on their faces as you share your story. You can tell that they hear us. We connect a face to those policy's and that gives more meaning to why it is important. I am a part of this industry for personal reasons that have impacted my family and my friends. It fuels my passion for what I do. What we all do. But most importantly, why we do what we do and for who. Every year when I go to our nation’s Capitol, to be a part of something greater, it reignites that passion for what we do and then fuels the fire and drive for the next year.
What I have learned is... never give up, share your stories, know what policies your lawmakers support. We DO make a difference! YOU make a difference.
If you don’t know who your legislator is you can find them here.
